Is Spirulina Quietly Damaging Your Brain?
TL;DR
Your grandma was right. Eat your greens. She just did not mean algae.
Spirulina is a bacteria. It sits at the top of the ingredient list in some of the most popular greens powders on the market, sold as a superfood. It is not a green. It is not even a plant.
Contamination with neurotoxins and liver toxins is just the beginning. Spirulina can also flare autoimmune disease. And it can interfere with the B12 your brain needs to function.
Daily spirulina, especially after 45, is a poor bet.
The morning ritual nobody questions
You scoop. You stir. You drink. You feel virtuous.
Most people assume spirulina is a plant. A green. Something like kale, but in powder form.
It is not.

What is spirulina, really?
Spirulina is a cyanobacterium. The old name was blue green algae. Modern science classifies it as bacteria.
This is not a label trick. It is biology.
Cyanobacteria are tiny single celled organisms that grow in water. Some are harmless. Some make some of the most powerful natural toxins on Earth.
Spirulina lives in this same family.
Does spirulina contain a neurotoxin?
Cyanobacteria produce a compound called BMAA. It is a neurotoxin.
In a 2016 study, monkeys were fed BMAA every day for 140 days. Their brains developed the same damage seen in Alzheimer's and ALS patients. Tangles. Plaques.

So is BMAA actually in your spirulina powder?
The answer is messy.
Some studies have found it. Some have not. The result depends on which lab method is used. A 2017 paper showed this directly. Two methods detected BMAA. A third did not. Same samples.
A bigger 2023 study tested 37 algal supplements. It found a related neurotoxin called DAB in every single one.
Honest summary: BMAA contamination is plausible. Sometimes it is found. Sometimes it is not. The related compound DAB is found more consistently. The biology is concerning. The product testing is mixed.
Is spirulina contaminated with liver toxins?
Spirulina is grown in open ponds. Other bacteria grow in those ponds too. Some of those bacteria make liver toxins called microcystins.
A 2023 Greek study tested 5 commercial spirulina products. All 5 had microcystins.
A bigger 2023 French study tested 623 samples. None went over the legal safety limit.
Translation: contamination happens. How much depends on the producer. You cannot tell from the label which kind you are buying.
Heavy metals are a separate problem. China has reported widespread lead, mercury, and arsenic contamination in domestic spirulina. Independent testing of leading commercial greens powders has found enough lead to warrant warnings against use by children and pregnant women.
This is not a fringe concern. It is a known and unevenly managed issue.
Can spirulina trigger autoimmune disease?
Spirulina is sold as immune support. That is true. The mechanism is the problem.
Spirulina turns on a pathway in your immune system called TLR4. This drives inflammation.
In a 2023 lab study, blood cells from people with dermatomyositis (an autoimmune disease) reacted much more strongly to spirulina than blood cells from healthy people. The signal was loud and inflammatory.
A 2024 clinical study followed 673 patients with autoimmune skin disease. Spirulina was the most common immunostimulatory supplement they used. Among those on supplements, 31% had a flare or new onset disease afterward.
The American College of Rheumatology now warns against immunostimulatory supplements like spirulina for anyone with autoimmune disease in their family or personal history.
Autoimmune disease becomes more common after 40. Many cases go undiagnosed. Many people do not know they are vulnerable until something triggers them.

Does spirulina block B12 absorption?
The toxins are just the beginning. The B12 problem is the other half.
Spirulina contains a B12 lookalike called pseudovitamin B12. It is a copy your body cannot use.
That alone would make spirulina a poor B12 source. The bigger issue is what the lookalike does to the real B12 you need.
Your B12 absorption protein still binds to the lookalike. Not as tightly as it binds the real thing, but enough to compete with it. Real B12 has to fight for absorption against a molecule that does nothing for you.
The size of the effect is debated. The direction is not.
Your brain needs B12. It keeps myelin healthy. It keeps neurotransmitters firing. Low B12 shows up as brain fog, fatigue, and memory problems. Severe deficiency causes permanent nerve damage.
After 45, your B12 source needs to be the real thing. And nothing should be getting in its way.
What the regulators say
The US National Institutes of Health says there is not enough evidence to recommend spirulina for any human condition.
The European Food Safety Authority has rejected multiple spirulina health claims for lack of evidence.
The French food safety agency advises against spirulina for people with phenylketonuria, allergic predisposition, or muscle and liver vulnerability. They have called for clinical trials to set a safe daily dose. None has been agreed.
Marketing has run ahead of science. The label is louder than the literature.
What real greens actually look like
When your grandma said eat your greens, she for sure did not mean eat algae.
Leafy plants have been part of human diets on every continent.
Kale. Spinach. Broccoli. Parsley. Watercress. Chard. Rocket.
These are real greens. They are plants. They contain folate, vitamin K, magnesium, fiber, and polyphenols in a form your body recognises.

Frequently asked questions
Is spirulina safe to take every day?
For healthy adults at low doses, the short term risk appears low. For chronic daily use, especially after 45 or with autoimmune predisposition, the case is weaker than the marketing implies.
Do popular greens powders contain spirulina?
Many do, and often as a top ingredient by weight. Always read the label. If spirulina is in the first three ingredients, that product is mostly a spirulina drink.
Is spirulina the same as chlorella?
No. Chlorella is a true green alga. Spirulina is a bacteria. They are different organisms.
Can spirulina cause memory problems?
There is no proven cause and effect link in humans. The concern is theoretical, based on what BMAA does to monkey brains. Whether that risk applies to your specific spirulina product depends on contamination levels you cannot see.
